Wednesdays, 7:30-9:30pm Sundanese Dance (West Java, Indonesia), $14. Sundanese Dance is highly accessible while providing a novel and exotic experience. Sundanese dance blends elements of classical dance, popular dance and pencak silat, a martial art.The resulting dances are dramatic, sensuous and exciting, often causing the musicians to whoop and whistle in encouragement. The music is virtuostic, forceful and dynamic. Sundanese dance has become very popular throughout Indonesia. Series runs six weeks, May 10th - June 14th.
Sundays, 12:00-1:30pm Javanese Dance (Central Java, Indonesia), $12. Central Javanese dance, originally a royal court display, is characterized by stylized, articulated movement of the head, hands, body and feet. An impassive, serene facial expression is usually maintained. The costume always includes a long sash about the waist, the trailing ends of which are flicked, swept by the foot, or held over the wrists to display a sweep of color. The headdress and body ornaments are elaborate, glittering and colorful. Because an ideal character is seen to be graceful, elegant and self-controlled, the heroic male parts are often played by women. Series runs six weeks, May 14th - June 18th.
